Eye condition

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of conditions that damage the optic nerve – frequently associated with raised intraocular pressure.

Who is at higher risk?

Age from around 40, glaucoma in the family, raised intraocular pressure, strong short- or long-sightedness, circulatory problems or low blood pressure, as well as diabetes and other eye conditions.

Important examinations

Measuring the pressure is important but not sufficient on its own. Assessing the optic disc shows whether damage is already present; a high-resolution optic disc OCT (self-pay) detects changes early and documents progression precisely. Note: a normal pressure does not reliably rule out glaucoma.

Treatment

Eye drops are the most common treatment and lower intraocular pressure. SLT laser treatment is a gentle outpatient option without an incision and can reduce dependence on drops – it is not suitable for every form of glaucoma. Surgery is only necessary in selected cases.

Important for you

Attend your check-ups and use your drops reliably – even if you do not notice anything. Damage that has already occurred can usually not be reversed; the aim is to slow progression and preserve vision.

Typical symptoms

  • No symptoms for a long time
  • Later, visual field loss that often only becomes apparent late
  • In an acute glaucoma attack: severe pain, a red eye, nausea – an emergency

Early stages as a rule cause no symptoms whatsoever – which is why early detection is so important.

How we examine

Intraocular pressure, assessment of the optic nerve, visual field testing and OCT – together these give a reliable picture and make progression comparable.

How we treat

Pressure-lowering drops, laser procedures or surgery – matched to the findings and the course of the disease.

When you should act quickly

Sudden severe eye pain with nausea and deteriorating vision can be a glaucoma attack – call us immediately.
